An open letter for Bob Marley

Dear Bob Marley,

First of all, I would like to say thank you on behalf of my generation from all over the world, because you had inspired us through your music and your vision, which represented the freedom of expressing thoughts and embodies the profound wisdom. Along with the Wailers, you succeed to get an access to the best recording facilities and you were treated in much the same way as rock band were treated in the 70s, while the reggae band used to sold only on singles and some cheap albums. Somehow you succeed performed and presented the street culture of Jamaica with reggae music to all audience in the various countries. From time to time the amount of rastafarism’ followers become wider than before.

I admit that you are a legend; your charisma will always live in our heart, along with your vision of “One Love and One World” from your beliefs of Rastafari ideology, you had opened our eyes so that people would live in peace and freedom without any war and racism. Unfortunately, I must say, this ideology doesn’t really apply well in this 21st Century, especially with the War of Iraq, where people killing each other and Moslem people become the scapegoat. It is such a pity really, why people can just live next to each other with peace and smile just as what you reflected in most of the songs.

Furthermore, I also admire your courage through your lyrics to legalize marijuana. With the reggae tune that becomes the cannabis smoker’s hymn, you campaigned a lot about ganja. For instance; the way you wrote your songs in your album “Kaya” saying that you believed Ganja would bring togetherness, happiness, humanity and peace, had made people changed their point of view about Ganja. Then, when it became legalized in the Netherlands; people worshiped you because they know if it wasn’t you who shared your thoughts with the world about Ganja, people wouldn’t had the courage to make the marijuana legalization happened

Thank you very much for your aspiration. Your music and philosophy will always live in my heart.

Kind regards,

Vicky Marcia
